Meal delivery kits have seen an exponential increase in demand post Covid-19 and the resulting lockdowns that have occurred as a result. No longer do people feel as free, or as confident to go shopping in their local stores or supermarkets. Sri Lankan dishes now form a staple part of the available options when selecting your meals for the forthcoming week, but how good are they and do they represent value for money?
HelloFresh are a leader in the UK recipe box sector and offer a range of Sri Lankan dishes for you to choose from. Our pick is their Sri Lankan Chicken with Coconut & Courgette Pilaf and Coconut Yoghurt. Whilst you get the traditional coconut flavour, we felt that the spices were a little overpowering, but if you like a real punch to your chicken it’s certainly a dish to consider. At £3.83 per serving based on a family of 4, it won’t break the bank either and you can even get 50% off your first order for new customers, bringing the price down to a little over £1.90 per serving.
Gousto also provide a wide range of Sri Lankan dishes as part of their meal delivery offering. One that got our tase buds flowing was their Sri Lankan Crab Curry. With meal delivery companies normally offering far cheaper protein with their recipes, this represents a more luxurious meal and we were impressed with the portion sizes on offer. It left a family of 4 (2 children) very satisfied.
If you’re vegetarian, fear not, Feastbox offer a wonderful Sri Lankan Okra potato Curry, that is wonderfully spiced, but balanced with the creaminess of the coconut milk. Portion sizes are adequate, although we would have hoped for a few more potatoes, to help fill us up to the brim. Feastbox are a new entrant to the food delivery market, but based on this recipe, we think they’ll go from strength to strength.
So if you are looking to try out meal delivery kits in the future, which company gets our nod? If it’s a tasty range of Sri Lankan recipes to choose from that give a nod to the culture, we vote for Gousto. They have the widest range of recipes to choose from (plenty of veggie options too) and come closest to the traditional flavours that you come to expect from Sri Lankan cooking. Don’t forget, if you haven’t tried any of these companies before, you can get a discount for most of them open to new customers.
