Does Ice Ruin the Spirits of Mexico?

written by Food Corner August 30, 2018
Spirits of Mexico

There’s nothing like a cool drink on a hot day. If you’re lucky enough, maybe the drink is a bit alcoholic. Though depending on your drink of choice, ice may make or break the taste of it.

What exactly is a Spirit?

Have you ever heard of an alcoholic drink referred to as a spirit? Have you ever wondered why they call it that?

Alcohol that is referred to as a spirit tends to be more powerful than other types of alcohol.

A quick list of spirits includes vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whisky.

5 Types of Spirits of Mexico

Here’s a list of some of the most popular spirits with Mexican origins. But before you reach for your ice maker machine to add something cool to your drink, make sure it doesn’t ruin the taste.

1. Tequila

Tequila has gotten more popular recently. Though many people may not know that it can only be made in Mexico. It comes from Jalisco, but it can also be made in Tamaulipas, Nayarit, Michoacán, and Guanajuato.

With tequila, it’s all a matter of opinion when it comes to ice. Some people say it enhances the flavor, while others think it washes it away.

2. Mezcal

Some mezcals could contain a worm, but it’s only a marketing ploy. Most mezcal makers think the worm ruins their product.

This spirit can be made in bamboo or clay stills. Some producers prefer the more modern copper still. Only the states Oaxaca, Guerrero, Durango, Luis Potosi, and Zacatecas can call the drink mezcal.

For the most part, people prefer this alcohol straight, at room temperature. Cold dulls the natural congeners that it has.

3.Raicilla

This spirit is named after the only area that’s allowed to make it. Only traditional methods can be used to make raicilla.

The Jalisco region uses an above ground brick or clay oven, while in Cabo Corrientes use earthen pits.

This is usually a cold drink and mixed with different fruit juice. Though there are people like it straight.

4.Bancanora

This can only be made in Sonora. It’s a newer spirit, it’s only been legal to make since the 1990s. It’s made from 7 to 10-year-old Agave Angustifolia Haw. Its ingredients are roasted in earthen pits, crushed, fermented, and then distilled.

People like this both straight and with ice.

5. Sotol

This is the traditional spirit of Chihuahua. The stool plant is in the same family as agave. It grows in the high desert of Chihuahua.

It has the nickname Desert Spoon. It has a smoky and herbal taste.

People say it best to drink it straight.

It’s All a Matter of Opinion

Whether you drink any of these spirits with ice or not,  it’s ultimately up to you. Though if you do use ice, use nugget ice makers. The bigger the ice, the longer it takes to melt. That way you can spend hours sipping your drink in the sun.
