Foods can have a notable impact on our sleep and there are a number of ones that encourage and also discourage sleep – here’s a good list.

Trying to Sleep? Here are Foods to Eat and Those that You Should Avoid

Foods to Eat Before You Sleep

Bananas

Bananas are usually considered to be an energy-boosting type of food, but they contain an array of minerals, particularly magnesium which relaxes the muscles. They are also rich in melatonin and serotonin which enhance sleep.

Honey

A single teaspoon of this wonderful type of food is adequate enough to alleviate the release of orexin and stimulate melatonin’s release which helps your body to wind down.

Trying to Sleep? Here are Foods to Eat and Those that You Should Avoid

Almonds

Almonds are known to be an ideal source of healthy fats, but they are also rich in magnesium and tryptophan, both which help reduce nerve and muscle function. They also help bring the heart’s rhythm to a steady pace, which helps you relax.

Turkey

This is one of the most popular sources of tryptophan and it’s also an excellent source of protein which makes you feel full and ready to rest.

Oats

Oats are yet another type of food full bursting with minerals, vitamins and amino acids that help with the release of melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone. Oats ideally stimulate the production of insulin and help with raising blood sugar. Eat these and enjoy a nice rest on your Amerisleep mattress.

Foods You Should Avoid Before Sleeping

Cheese

Have you ever heard people say that they experienced weird dreams after eating a lot of cheese? Well, cheese is rich in tyramine, an amino acid that makes the brain feel more alert. So, despite your love for a post-dinner cheese board, consuming it will only give you a hard time in sleeping.

Alcohol

A glass of wine or a can of beer might actually help you nod off, but alcohol tends to stop you from falling into deep sleep.

Coffee

This is one is a no-brainer. Taking coffee is not a wise idea when you are trying to sleep. Caffeine stays in the body for an exceptionally long time and you’re going to have a hard time sleeping. Unless you want to pull an all-nighter, coffee after dinner or a few hours before your bedtime is a no-no.

Spicy Food

Have you ever experienced digestion problems after eating curry food? Well, other than indigestion, most spices contain capsaicin which gives your body a hard time when it comes to regulating temperature. This results in stressful night’s sleep.
