What Exactly is Butter Coffee and Why People Drink It

written by Amila Gamage Wickramarachchi May 11, 2018
5 Creative ideas to spicing up your cup of coffee

Nine years back, putting butter into your coffee could surely get you branded as delusional. But coming to modern days, Bulletproof coffee has evolved into a blazing trend which is celebrated amongst health aficionados who wish to stay energized during those intense workouts. A basic butter coffee recipe consists of a tablespoon of grass-fed butter which is added to black coffee along with a spoonful of medium-chain triglyceride or MCT oil. This growing bulletproof coffee cult has given rise to speciality MCT oil brands. Several people even opt for high-end coconut oil which is a favourite natural supplement of the MCT with exactly similar composition.

Although coffee puritans might recoil at the very idea of this bizarre combination, those in search of new ways of warding off body weight would surely find it interesting. The recipe was devised back in 2014 and has continued with its winning streak in spite of critics branding it as a fad which would just pass with time. As the health ingredients of this coffee are blended together, you get a rich and frothy beverage which is much healthier in comparison with the plain black coffee. Several bulletproof coffee evangelists have insisted that they have experienced a blast of energy gushing through their veins following consumption of this highly popular beverage which has also been accredited with staving off hunger pangs for quite some time. Popular celebrities such as TV presenter Jimmy Fallon and Hollywood actor Shaileen Woodley have also openly advocated their love for bulletproof coffee which has been tagged as ‘brain food’ by many.

What exactly is Butter Coffee and Why People Drink It

If the coffee is blended rather than being stirred, then the final product is a rich frothy latte. However, even the bulletproof coffee fanatics have warned not to look down at the mug once the top froth have been sipped off. The tiny droplets of fat hovering around are coffee are known as micelles and is created when butter, coffee and oil are blended together at high speeds. This actually helps our body with easy digestion of the rich beverage.

Benefits Of Drinking Bulletproof Coffee

  • It is rich in nutrients which we usually associate with the black coffee and help in prevention of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and diabetes. It is also known to be of great help for our brain in fighting depression, lowering the risk of stroke and protecting our liver.
  • It helps in weight loss by facilitating the breakdown process of body fats into energy. People who consume this beverage for breakfast do not feel hungry anytime soon which also aids in prevention of over-eating which is one of the biggest triggers of weight gain.
  • The addition of MCT or coconut oil to the beverage makes it rich in omega-3 and 6 fatty acids which again has a big role to play in the proper functioning of our various body parts. Omega 3 fatty acids are especially important for pregnant women since they boost the brain and eye development of the foetus.
  • A moderate dosage of Bulletproof coffee improves the cognitive functions and abilities of people especially if they wish to start their day with a fasted cardio session.

So, include this magical beverage you can serve yourself with no added sugar and say hello to healthy living.
