Baby Kailan with grated coconut (Kola Mallum)

Sri Lankan Kola Gowa Mallun
Kola Mallun

In Sri Lanka we cook some green cabbage leaves (kola gowa) with grated coconut and the dish is named as ‘Kola mallum’.When I see baby kalian,I remember those green cabbage leaves which is bigger than these baby kalian leaves. But the taste is much similar. So, most of the times I cook baby kalian in a Sri Lankan recipe with added grated coconut.

Kola Gowa
Kola Mallum is always a healthy addition to the meal. But need to cook with care to not to overcook.
Below is the recipe of Baby Kailan cooked with grated coconut (Kola Mallun).Instead of Baby Kailan, we can add some other green leaves too.
Kola mallum

Ingredients
Baby Kailan 100g
 3-4 green chili sliced
1/2  Onion Sliced
1/4 tsp turmeric
Salt as per taste
½ cup fresh grated coconut
1 drop of cooking oil
Method
Wash, drain & slice the baby kailan leaves thinly.
In a pan, mix all the ingredients well together with sliced leaves.
Add 1 drop of oil to this and mix well.(remember, it is a small drop & this will keep the colour & shine of leaves)
Cook under low heat for 2-3 minutes.
Do not overcook. Switch off the flame when the pan is hot. The remaining heat of the pan is enough to cook the mallum keeping its colour.
Serve with plain rice and other curries.
