How to taste more local food when you travel

Traveling to new destinations is always interesting and enjoyable. Among the activities during any holiday, you will get the opportunity to experience new food from the destination. This is why Tasting local food is one of the best ways to understand the local culture. Don’t forget that you can connect with locals through food. Local cuisines have such power! How to taste local food when you travel? Is that your doubt now?

When you travel for short holidays of less than a week, how do you get the opportunity to taste more and more local food? Within a short period of time, you have to visit attractions, plan your trip, and even travel from one point to another. Sometimes, short holidays are a bit stressful if you don’t plan them well.

Usually, our family trips are really short. Most of the trips are 3D2N trips. But, I find time to taste local cuisine within this short period. Check our Food hunting in Malacca, Malaysia.

In case you plan such short trips, here are a few ways that you can find enough time to taste most of the local food from the destination that you travel.

Take your breakfast at the hotel buffet

The breakfast buffet is always a great source of local cuisine (The image is from my travel blog leisureandme.com)

This is one of my best tips for tasting local cuisine. For me, the breakfast buffet of the accommodation is the number one choice to taste different local food without much hassle. But, be sure to book your accommodation that offers a breakfast buffet at your room rate. Usually, buffets are with local cuisine together with a choice of western and other international food. You will even find the names without much trouble. It is easy to taste more different food while you enjoy your breakfast. And it is fun to taste different local food while you are on a short holiday.

Find local restaurants that serve food from local cuisine

Before you reach your destination, do your homework. Do your research about the destination and its food. Well, I usually don’t buy expensive travel guides. Instead, I read a lot of other blogs to find more details about the new destination. In this way, I easily find a few restaurants that are worth visiting to taste the local food. Travel guides at reservations.com are always helpful for me to find more details of the destination I travel including restaurant recommendations.

For instance, if you travel to an Asian destination, be sure to include local restaurants that serve local dishes that are unique to Asia. If you travel to Europe, then trying food that is unique to Europe can be the best experience. Similarly, there are Lehi restaurants that offer western style food for those living in, and visiting, this particular area of Utah, as well as cuisines from around the world so you can try even more new things. With a wide range of food choices starting from burgers and salads to fish and chips, you will be delighted with different flavours. This is why it is wise to visit local restaurants when you travel.

Don’t forget the street food

Well, I know you cannot eat much food for the sake of sampling during a short holiday. But, tasting street foods are usually fun and enjoyable. Most of the street foods are snacks and you will not find hard to taste more food. I know I can eat different food while traveling.

Try street food, you’ll love such experience. But, be sure to choose the places that are with hygiene. Some destinations are not advisable for tasting street food. Therefore before you travel, read more about the destination you travel.

Join with a Local food tour

Local food tours are another great way to experience local cuisine. You can learn the culture, meet the locals and taste samples of the food while you experience a food tour. Be sure to check the details and itinerary before you book your tour.

Visit a local market

Local markets are great places to find local fruits and vegetables. You will even experience local food culture when you visit a market during a holiday. And it is so much fun!

Attend a cooking class

If you have enough time, you can join with a cooking class which you can learn about cooking some of the popular dishes from the local cuisine. This is one of the best ways to learn about cooking while sampling.

Above are some of my best ways to learn more about local cuisine when I travel. Be sure to plan your trip before you reach the destination. In such a way, you can easily save time and your holiday will be fuss-free.

Part of the fun of traveling to me is the different foods we get to try. I’m going to try your tips to get in more of the local foods the next time we travel. I always stay where they offer free breakfast because it’s just too hectic trying to get the family ready and out the door to go anywhere when they’re all complaining of being hungry, lol.

It’s exciting to try new things. But it can come with consequences. My stomach doesn’t always agree with what I want to try so I’m on the picky side when trying new things. I would completely agree on making certain the street food is safe to eat.

The way I did it was getting to know people out there while I was traveling. Then I asked to be taken to the out of the way places only locals know about. You get to try so many dishes that way.
