In Sri Lankan cuisine you can find that there are many curry recipes. Can you imagine a finger licking delicious thick gravy in your plate of rice? If you are not a curry fan, then you will not admire it. But most Sri Lankans love to eat curried vegetables with rice. This is why Sri Lankans have curry recipes for most of the vegetables and some fruits.
My Sri Lankan holidays are always blessed with garden adventures. As of most Sri Lankan homes my mom too maintains a home garden. Therefore we have some home grown vegetables and fruits to cook while enjoying the happiness of gardening.
We had some Kiri Ala plants in a corner of the land which was grown without much care and attention. During the holiday Amma suggested me about cooking Taro roots for lunch assuming there are mature roots in her bunch of plants.
While there are different Kiri Ala recipes, here is how we cooked our home grown kiri ala into a delicious finger licking Sri Lankan curry.This is more similar to Sri Lankan Potato Curry.

Taro roots are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals such as Manganese and Vitamin B6.Taro roots are also known as a food that reduces blood sugar and risk of heart disease. Although these details are for your knowledge only it is good to refer health advice for more details. Eating Kiri Ala moderately won’t give you any issues same as with other foods.
Recipe: Sri Lankan Kiri Ala Curry (Taro Roots Curry)
Ingredients (for 3-4 servings)
300g Kiri ala
½ of medium sized onion sliced
2-3 green chili sliced
1 tspn raw curry powder
½ tspn turmeric powder
1/4 tspn Fenugreek seeds
Piece of Cinnamon
Rampe & curry leaves
Salt as per taste
1 cup thin coconut milk
½ cup thick coconut milk
Method
Step 1: Prepare kiri ala for cooking
Peel the skin. Wash thoroughly.
Cut kiri ala into bite size pieces.
Step 2: Prepare the curry
In a pan, place kiri ala pieces.
Add all ingredients above other than thick coconut milk.
Mix well and cook until kiri ala is boiled well.
Finally add thick coconut milk and mix well.
Simmer few minutes until coconut milk starts boiling.
At this point check salt and adjust if necessary.
Switch off the flame and keep the curry on the stove.
The hotness of the stove is good enough to thicken the curry.
It is ready to serve with plain rice.
