Alu Kesel Mallung (Raw Banana with Grated Coconut)

In Sri Lanka we cook Ash Plantain (alu kesel) which is a type of banana. However, here in Singapore I still didn’t see ash plantain. Instead we are able to buy another type of raw banana from Indian shops.

I usually try Sri Lankan ash plantain recipes using this type of raw banana found here. This is another adventure in my Sri Lankan kitchen which I tried to cook raw banana with grated coconut.

Alu Kesel Mallung (Raw Banana with Grated Coconut)
Sri Lankan Food

I adapted this recipe from Kerala raw banana thoran. Still I changed the recipe as per Sri Lankan taste buds adding more spiciness. We loved this dish .Adding of coconut made the dish more delicious and because I tempered it at the beginning, it was with full of aroma.
Here is my recipe for Alu Kesel Mallung (Raw Banana with Grated Coconut). I hope you will try it. This banana mallum well goes with plain rice and other sides. Instead of raw banana, try ash Plantain if you live in Sri Lanka. And don’t forget to let me know how the results are. I would love to hear from you all.
Hope you like to read and try Sri Lankan recipes. Please help me by sharing the posts of Food Corner in Pinterest,Google plus or any social media.

Method

How to cook Alu Kesel Mallung (Raw Banana with Grated Coconut)

Grind fresh coconut into a fine paste together with green chili, red chili, curry powder and turmeric powder. Keep aside.
Then, wash & peel the skin of raw banana. Cut raw banana into small bite size cubes. Remember to put banana into water while you cut it.
Now we are ready to cook raw banana.
Heat oil in a pan.
When oil is hot, add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds start to pop out, add onion, red dried chili and curry leaves.
Stir fry till onion become tender and start emitting the aroma.
Meanwhile, drain water from raw banana.
When onion is fried well and aromatic, add raw banana cubes and mix well.
Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes.
Then add fresh coconut paste which we kept aside. Also add fenugreek seeds and cinnamon piece. Mix well.
Cover and cook for another 5-6 minutes till raw banana is fully cooked. Add little bit water if required.
Add salt as per taste. Mix well.
Raw Banana mallung is ready to serve with plain rice.
