written by Amila Gamage Wickramarachchi August 7, 2015
Chicken Tikka

Chicken Tikka is one of the most popular Indian Recipes around the world. Usually Chicken tikka is made using an oven or in a grill. But, today my recipe is about making chicken tikka on a skillet (pan/tawa).This way is simple, quick and easy. I really like quick recipes and want to spend less time in the kitchen. If you are like me, then try this Chicken Tikka recipe on a skillet. Anyway, at the end of the recipe, I will share the details on how to make Chicken Tikka on an oven. So, it is up to you to select the method of your convenience. This time I made few chicken tikka skewers. So,it was easier to use a pan. However,if it is a large batch, then use of oven is much easier as we can make a whole batch at one try.

How to make Chicken Tikka?

Basically, to make chicken tikka, chicken cubes are marinated in a mix of yogurt and spices. If you are in Sri Lanka, here yogurt means ‘curd’, not the typical ‘yogurt’ you find in Sri Lankan groceries. But, outside Sri Lanka it is easier to buy natural curd/yogurt to prepare this chicken tikka, Indian dish.
Don’t forget to squeeze lemon juice to marinating and it is better if you marinate chicken at least 30 minutes to 2 hours. Yogurt makes the chicken tender, juicy and soft, which is the secret of delicious Chicken Tikka.

Chicken Tikka Easy Recipe

Ingredients:

300g Boneless chicken
3-4 spoon plain yogurt /(curd)
1 tbspn Red chilli powder
½ tspn Garam masala powder
1 tspn Coriander powder
1 tbspn Ginger garlic paste
½ tspn Salt or as required
3 tbspn cooking Oil
2 tbspn Lime juice
1 tspn Coriander powder
¼ tspn Red food color (optional)
1 Onion
1 Bell pepper (Green)
1 Bell pepper (red)
1 Tomato
Bamboo skewers 4-5 (soaked in water)

Method:

Initial Preparation,

In a bowl mix all the spices and yogurt together. Add food color if you use in to it. Keep aside.(However I didn’t use food coloring when I cook these)
Clean and cut chicken into cubes.
Cut onion, bell pepper and tomato into wedges.
Now add the chicken pieces into the spices mix .Then add tomato, bell papers and onion chunks too.
Mix well and set aside or inside refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to marinate.

Preheat the oven for 250 degree Celsius for 10 minutes. Arrange the chicken skewers in grilling tray inside the oven. Sprinkle bit of cooking oil on the chicken.
Bake in the preheated oven in 200 degree Celsius for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, turn the chicken tikka onto the other side and bake for another 10 minutes or till chicken is properly grilled.
Serve hot with your desired chutney or salad.

Notes:

-If you are in  Sri Lanka, use curd when this recipe requires plain yogurt.

-Number of skewers depend on the way you insert chicken and vegetables.

-Adjust spices and chili powder according to the taste.

-To get the restaurant style appearance, use some red food colouring. However, these chicken tikka skewers are without coloring.

-If you cant find garam masala, simply use Sri Lankan Raw Curry Powder. No harm.Still you can get the taste.
