Sri Lankan Soya Meat Curry is another favourite vegetarian dish which is popular in Sri Lanka. It is same at our home too.Anyway, this Soya Meat Curry is cooked using Sri Lankan Raw Curry Powder.
I usually cook soya meat at home as it is a good source of veggie protein. However I always buy plain soya chunks without the spice and flavor sachets. In that way I am sure it is a dish with no added MSG. Usually I buy few packs from Sri Lanka every time I visit which is enough for few months. One reason is that the chunks are smaller and therefore it is tastier.Anyway my main reason is that they are certified as GMO free products. (Not a Genetically modified food).Still in Singapore, I couldnβt find a Soya meat brand which claims as a non GMO product.(oh I canβt stay away from my habit of reading the whole label before purchasing anything π )
Check my previous recipe for Sri Lankan Soya meat curry which uses curry powder and other spices after slightly toasting. Taste of this curry is bit different from that curry. Try both these recipes & let me know what is the outcome!
Here is the recipe for Sri Lankan style Soya Meat Curry with Raw Curry Powder.(cooked as a dry curry)
Recipe: Sri Lankan Soya Meat Curry
Ingredients: (for 3-4 servings)
1 cup soy chunks
1 tomato sliced
1 onion sliced
1-2 red chilies
2-3 green chili sliced lengthwise
1-2 tsp chili powder
1 tbs Raw curry powder
ΒΌ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp fenugreek seeds
Piece of cinnamon stick
Curry leaves
Piece of a pandan leaf (rampe)
Oil
Thick coconut milk Β½ cup
Salt to taste
2-3 cups of hot water to soak soy chunks
Method
First soak soy meat /chunks in hot water for about 10 minutes. Add some salt to the water when soaking.
Once the soy chunks are soaked, drain the water. Squeeze soya chunks Β to remove any excess water
Mix all the spices listed above with soy chunks and keep aside.
Heat about 2-3 tbspn oil in a pan.
When it is hot, add mustard seeds.
When it is popping out, add onion.
Once onion are tender, add red chili, green chili, curry leaves and rampa accordingly.
Mix well and sautΓ© for about 1 minute.
Then add tomato into this and sautΓ© till tomato cooked well.(becomes like a sauce/paste)
Once tomato is well cooked, add soya meat chunks. Mix well. Cover & cook for 2-3 minutes. The liquid in tomato paste is enough for cooking. If the mix appear dry, add few spoons of water.
When soya chunks are well coated with tomato paste, add thick coconut milk.
Adjust salt to taste. Cook another 1-2 minutes while mixing the curry.
Serve with plain rice & Enjoy!!!
Do you cook Soya chunks? Have you ever checked whether it is a non GMO product or not?
